As part of this class project, students interviewed their grandparents and other relatives about their experience immigrating to Canada. These students and their teachers will present their findings in a special event that will take place on Thursday, May 24th, at 5:30 pm in the Salle Québec at the Hellenic Community Centre of Greater Montreal (5777 Av Wilderton).

Round Table on the Greek Mile End of 1960s and 1970s

A Chapter in the History of a Neighborhood: The Greek Mile End

In the Montreal imaginary, the Mile End figures as a place of transition. Over the years, many immigrant communities have contributed to transforming this neighborhood and, in the 60s and 70s, it was the newly arrived Greek population’s turn to leave its mark. This panel is a collaboration between a seminar on European immigration in the Department of History at McGill and Immigrec, a research project on Greek immigration to Canada. It will examine the Greek Mile End from various perspectives:

Tassos Anastassiadis, Assistant Professor of History at McGill and one of Immigrec’s principal investigators, will present on the oral history program being carried out in Montreal’s Greek community.

Caroline Boreham, Immigrec’s research administrator, will present a digital map of the Mile End that visualizes the waves of Greek immigration to the neighborhood.

Alex Grasic, a History student at McGill and research assistant on the Immigrec project, will examine the Mile End West Project of the 1960s and 70s, through which the YMCA became involved with the local Greek community.

Jean-Philippe Bombay, a History student at McGill, will analyze the solidarity networks that were created among workers from different ethnic and linguistic communities. His talk places particular attention on the connections between the Greek, Jewish and Québécois communities.
